Sustainability

Toki Rapa Nui has sought to embody an undeniable ecological ethos in all its activities, promoting environmental awareness, respect for the surroundings, sustainable growth, and the formation of students eager to be agents of change.

Toki Rapa Nui's commitment ranges from the simplest actions, such as reducing single- use plastic and waste, minimizing unnecessary printed material, and recycling, to more extensive programs such as the construction of the fully self-sustainable School of Music and the Arts, and the agroecological program carried out in the past.

Moreover, we are a partner of the Plastic Oceans Foundation and members of the global Blue Communities network. Additionally, we are part of the Environmental Network along with other local organizations, an initiative created by the municipality of Rapa Nui to coordinate education in this field.

Agroeocología

Agroecology

Until 2022, a cultivation program was developed at Toki facilities, spearheaded by Juan Haoa and advised by agroecologist Juan Carlos Cabrera, with the aim of rescuing native species, gaining new knowledge, and promoting food self- sufficiency.

Throughout its development stages, the Environmental Education Network was present to strengthen and promote its progress.

NGO Toki carried out innovative projects where the combination of ancestral techniques with cutting-edge agricultural technologies was crucial to increase food production and improve its quality more efficiently.

The "Toki Organic Farm" had a strong educational focus, welcoming various schools and brigades and providing training for the community. The teaching focus was on agroecological advice, crop management, and the quality of local products, along with the creation of a seed bank.

In the remote island of Rapa Nui, where food issues and the high cost of importing food from the mainland are daily challenges, this program became highly relevant.

Having completed its cycle, this agricultural program also left a legacy of ancestral gardens as educational references for the community, which can be observed in the vicinity of the school.

Construcción

Self-Sustainable Construction

The headquarters of the School of Music and the Arts is a self-sufficient and self- sustainable building, winner of the National Environmental Award in 2015, awarded by the Recyclápolis Foundation, the Catholic University, and the newspaper El Mercurio.

This architectural masterpiece, designed in the shape of a flower by the revolutionary founder of Earthship Biotecture, Michael Reynolds, aimed to address various issues on the island, such as excess waste, energy deficiency, and water scarcity.

The school features solar panels for energy generation, a rainwater harvesting system for sanitary use, and a roof made of an entirely ecological elastomeric membrane, setting an example for the world on how to improve the engineering-nature relationship.

Moreover, a total of 2,500 tires, 40,000 glass and plastic bottles, 20 tons of aluminum cans, and 10 tons of cardboard were used in its construction.

Nearly a thousand volunteers from around the world participated in some way in its construction, which took place between November 2014 and April 2016, the date of its inauguration.

The construction was led from start to finish by Enrique Icka, founder of Toki, who donated the land where the entire project is located.

Its financing was achieved through crowdfunding, contributions from Entel, and with the support of Desafío Levantemos Chile.

Environment

We are strategic partners of the Plastic Oceans Foundation and members of the global Blue Communities program, which motto is "We can and must act locally to accelerate change globally".

Furthermore, we are part of the Environmental Education Network, a platform that brings together various institutions, organizations, and local groups, led by the Municipality, with the aim of collectively addressing major challenges in social, environmental, and cultural matters.

We also organized the International Social Innovation Festival (fiiS) in Rapa Nui. The purpose of this event was to accelerate cultural transformation - through global action - to achieve Sustainable Development, inspiring widespread awareness, showcasing collective action, and celebrating Radical Collaboration.

Periodically, our School of Music and the Arts welcomes children, youth, and volunteers in general, who seek to learn about our educational programs and the completely self- sustainable construction of our school.

We have collaborated with national and international governmental and NGO organizations in informational and awareness campaigns about microplastics, ocean pollution, waste management, among others. Similarly, we have participated in island reforestation activities and beach clean-ups.

We have hosted or organized educational talks on composting and recycling. Likewise, we promote sustainable policies in our daily activities, such as reducing single-use plastics, promoting waste reduction, and minimizing paper use, among others.
