Environment
At ONG Toki, we understand environmental care as a profound cultural responsibility, working to serve as a bridge between ancestral Rapa Nui wisdom and the sustainable solutions of the present.
We promote ecological education rooted in identity, and we act as agents of change in the protection of the territory and the island’s self-sufficiency.
Likewise, we carry out practical workshops and talks at Toki, in schools, and in community organizations, fostering reflection on Rapa Nui, the island’s condition as one of the world’s seven major waste vortexes, and the need to serve as an example for the world.
Collaboration with specialized organizations in this field is key. We are strategic partners of the Plastic Oceans Foundation and members of the global Blue Communities program, whose motto is “We can and must act locally to accelerate change at a global level”.
In addition, we are part of the Environmental Education Network, an initiative that brings together diverse local institutions, organizations, and community groups—led by the Municipality—with the aim of jointly addressing major social, environmental, and cultural challenges.
Informational talks and awareness-raising workshops on microplastics, ocean pollution, the destination of our waste, recycling, waste reduction, and ecological practices.
In addition, we were organizers of the Changing Minds, Changing Worlds talks and of the International Festival of Social Innovation (fiiS) held in Rapa Nui. The former was a gathering that sought solutions to current challenges through innovation, bringing together the private and public sectors as well as entrepreneurs. The latter aimed to accelerate cultural transformation—through global action—in order to achieve Sustainable Development, inspiring mass awareness, making collective action visible, celebrating collaboration, and highlighting the importance of moving toward food sovereignty.

Through ecological gardens, training programs, and ancestral gardens,we
strengthen our connection with the land.
Built using waste materials and clean energy, it was awarded the National Environmental Award for its vision. It is a model of regenerative architecture and an example for children, youth, volunteers, and visitors who regularly come to our school.
Reforestation and landscape restoration
We take part in coastal clean-up campaigns and the planting of native and endemic
species, combating erosion and restoring natural balance.
Responsible waste management:
We promote recycling, composting, and waste reduction within the community—especially among children and youth—along with efforts to reduce
overall waste.
